What’s It Like To join The MilkCrate Team?

“Like getting into jiu jitsu” (a recent activity she’s actually started. Beware.)

…scary, bloody, painful, thrilling, and a strong bonding experience…maybe leave out ‘bloody.’”

Morgan BermanCEO

“Working at MilkCrate is like being in a dramedy. The stakes often feel high and you’re constantly kept on your toes, but you can always count on some good comedic relief. Your coworkers (or “scene partners”) are your support system and simultaneously challenge you to be better collaborators and creators. It is exhilarating!”

Senior Software Engineer (React Native)

Are you excited by the opportunity to guide and grow a new but successful startup company’s technology? If so, we can’t wait to hear from you.

About You:

We need a React Native superhero. Our whole product is written in this and we want to keep it that way (for the foreseeable future anyways). You have an organized and creative mindset that drives you to find innovative solutions to common problems. You like the idea of working collaboratively with our CEO (me), Client Experience Manager, designer, and others to deliver an excellent product for our corporate, academic, and nonprofit clients.

Some of the superpowers that you possess include:

  • Eager to figure out how to take user data and funnel it back into a better UX that leads to behavior change
  • Exude passion for business and technology as a force for good in the world
  • Be an integrator and a manager of teammates
  • Care about and understand the business strategy and operational strategy to an extent where you can be a functional participant and contribute outside the technical domain
  • Zoom into the individual details while keeping the overall technology strategy in mind
  • Not only answer the questions but extrapolate: “Yes, and this is how we’d do it.”
  • Avoid being pulled down into the weeds and stay at a high enough level to maintain the strategic level vision, not just by setting a direction, but responding well to shifts in the landscape
  • Clear command about what needs to be done in the future given the variability of that future

The nitty gritty nerd stuff:

  • 5+ years’ software engineering and IT experience
  • Proven track record of success in leadership positions
  • Exceptional project management and organization skills
  • Understanding of our key technologies, including: React Native, REST API provided by a Ruby Sinatra application, and MongoDB.
  • Experience with these additional technologies are a plus:
    • Ruby / Ruby on Rails
    • JavaScript
    • CoffeeScript
    • SASS
    • MySQL (or any other SQL variant)
    • NoSQL databases / Back End as a Service

What you would do working at MilkCrate:

  • To start, half your time will be interfacing with our external tech team and half the time writing code to advance the product. Our goal is to build out a large enough tech team that your role would move away from daily coding and more to visioning and management.
  • Represent the technological agenda in staff meetings and when making hiring decisions
  • Take initiative in thought leadership, innovation and creativity for client and UX of product
  • Track, analyze and monitor technology performance metrics
  • Oversee all system design and changes in system architecture
  • In partnership with the company’s founders, identify opportunities and risks for delivering the company’s services, including identification of competitive services, opportunities for innovation, and assessment of marketplace obstacles and technical hurdles to the business success.
  • Identify technology trends and evolving social behavior that may support or impede the success of the business.
  • Lead strategic planning to achieve business goals by identifying and prioritizing development initiatives and setting timetables for the evaluation, development, and deployment of all web-based services.
  • Communicate the company’s technology strategy to investors, management, staff, partners, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with a User Experience Designer and potential customers to prepare wireframes or mockups of a prototype of the company’s web application.
  • Establish and supervise the software development process, setting short-term objectives and assessing progress as defined by the selected software development methodology.
  • As a member of the senior management team, establish a customer service and support process, with particular responsibility for web-based services that implement the support function.
  • Establish a process to integrate customer service and support with the software engineering process to support resolution of customer issues and improve application usability.

Some of the ways we make it worth it:

  • Strong ethical and values-driven company with team-forged norms
  • Nimble and merit-based startup-y culture
  • Positive, warm work environment with regular chocolate eating
  • Flexible office hours/partial work from home available
  • Easy access: Private and amazing Hawthorne neighborhood office in converted factory (four blocks from Ellsworth-Federal BSL stop) with bike storage, parking
  • Tasty: 2 blocks from Italian Market and all the pho you can eat.
  • Swimming: Did we mention the swimming pool across the street? Oh yeah. There’s a pool. Bring your floaties for lunch breaks in the deep end.
  • Bring your pet to the office if you want (we’d love it).

Compensation:

We are a pre-Series A startup. Salary will not reflect your worth, but what does? Compensation will grow as you contribute and we increase our resources. Working at the head of engineering at MilkCrate is a life changing, purposeful role in an amazing company that will provide a return on your investment. Plus all the snacks you can eat. Equity available after 45 days; will have starting percentage and opportunity to earn additional equity based on tenure and performance.
